Up to Date Fighter Guide
Being a fighter can be tough if you don't know exactly what you're doing. For that reason, I made this guide to point fledgling fighters in the right direction.
Stat Build and Weapon Skills
Unlike mages and rogues (for the most part), fighters need to base their stat build around what type of weapon they prefer to use. A combination of strength and dexterity will determine your damage with the weapon of your choice. Also, as a side note: You will never NEED intelligence as a fighter, but there are still a few good reasons to get it (higher magic resistance, etc). It's totally optional.
Longswords
For longswords, you're going to want to keep your strength and dexterity around the same level for maximum damage. Longswords have a special attack, flurry. It hits monsters adjacent to you randomly up to 5 times.
Axes
If you plan on using axes, you'd want to keep your strength and dexterity at about 75%/25%. Example, an axemaster with this build would have 75 strength and 25 dexterity. The Axe special attack is nifty. It's called cleave, and not only does it damage the opponent, but it cuts their defense stat in half AND causes the opponent to lose 25% of their max hitpoints over the next 10 seconds.
Polearms
For polearms, you're going to want to go mostly strength, leveling up your dexterity in moderation. An 80%/20% strength/dexterity build should guarantee that you'll be doing the maximum damage with your polearm. The polearms special is called Bloodbolt. It damages the opponent and sends a strong jolt of chain lightning through a number of opponents.
Maces
Macefighters would be well off using the polearms build, around 90%/10% strength/dexterity. The mace special is called thunderclap, and it damages AND confuses the target monster, as well as damaging and confusing every monster surrounding the initial target.
Armour
When it comes to being a fighter, there are many different ways to piece together your armour. Some fighters like for every piece of their armour to give the highest defense bonus possible, while some fighters like having high strength or dexterity bonuses. That's all up to you in the end, but here's a list of the different armour types and how they benefit (or betray) you.
Heavy armour
Heavy armour is more than likely going to be your best friend as a fighter. It gives a hefty defense and magic resistance bonus, but it slows your moving speed down considerably (although this wouldn't effect you if you were a half orc).
Medium armour
Sadly, medium armour seems to be a tad useless these days. It gives less of a defense bonus and doesn't make you that much more faster than heavy armour.
Light armour
Light armour is alright for +stat gear, but when it comes to defense, it's useless to a fighter. Only rogues fully benefit from the defense bonus that light armour gives.
Unarmoured
Unarmoured gear, such as gi or robes, is typically the fighter's choice for high +stat gear. It doesn't give any defense, but it barely makes a difference to your movement speed and is very light on your load.
Fighter Skills and Abilities
Tactics
Tactics raises as you fight with fighter weapons. Having high tactics gives you a defense bonus and an attack strength bonus.
Block
The higher your block skill is, the higher your chance of successfully blocking an attack. When you have a shield equipped, you'll attempt to block hits automatically. Shields can only be equipped while using a one handed weapon.
Bash
Bash is useful for the fighter that would rather die than travel with a rogue in order to pass locked doors. Having very high strength along with the bash ability, you'll be able to break down doors and smash open chests.
Taunt
This ability is for use in party situations, and should only be used by tanks. When you taunt the target monster, it concentrates all its attacks on you, giving your party members a clear shot at taking it down.
Kodiak's Fighter Guide is very outdated. It is, however, a piece of history, so it should remain in the manual.
Kodiak's Fighter Guide
Ohk, I am an accomplished fighter, and have been at the top for quite a while. I've been around the block many times and therefore know what I am talking about especially in this field.
For stats, Str is your prime followed by dex and int. 100-200 dex and 50-100int with all the rest in str is your target. This will ensure maneuverability, slight magic resistance and lots of hp, carrying capacity and the ability to wear anything.
For armor, the most AC you can find. Plate/field with plenty of +def is what you should look for, if you stumble upon one that is also blackrock/adamantium, your in luck. The other parts of your armor should focus on str or if you need it, dex. A high def shield is also a must, unless you have an anal preference to 2-handed weaps, which aren't as great as you'd think.
For weapons....run wild. You can use anything but foils, shortswords and bows. Pick a weapon to focus on based on personal preference or simply what you find first. High slaying is the obvious must. 2-handed weaps are ohk, but tend to be slow and prevent you from using a shield, which can be helpful with AC. The added damage is generally not a large difference.
For jewellry......+ def or str is all you want, but I suggest getting jewellry with the highest def. Don't waste these valuable positions on something that'll boost int or NV. Stat boosts will be given from your armor and NV can be negated with plenty of torches/spells.
For class points, the choice would be up to you. 25 magery will net you IL, M, AN, VL, EU, SL, VS and KOP. However, with chest traps being more deadly, the traps skill you'll get from 25 Rogue could be a great assist. It's up to you as far as it goes.
For PK, lets face it, unless you fight a high level, smart mage and Fighters and some Rogues with more AS and AC than you. If you have your AS in the 30s and AC in the 50s, you should be fine. If your AC is in the 60s, a balrog will have trouble hitting you, let alone some lvl 40-50 smartass. Your fighting style for pk is getting in your opponents face and bash him around.
When it comes to monster fighting, lure and kill monsters one at a time. Just because you have high AC and AS, doesn't mean you won't get annihilated by 5 vamps or 3 drags.
